Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey

Woodcliff Lake is a wooded Pascack Valley borough shaped by its namesake reservoir, established neighborhoods, strong public schools, park and recreation facilities, and direct NJ TRANSIT rail service. The community combines a quiet residential character with commercial and professional activity near Broadway, Tice Boulevard and Chestnut Ridge Road.

About Woodcliff Lake

History & the reservoir

1700s–1800s

Dutch-American farms, mills and early stone and frame houses helped define the Pascack Valley landscape.

1894

The borough was incorporated under the name Woodcliff.

1903

The Woodcliff Lake Reservoir was constructed across Pascack Brook, creating the water body that became the community’s defining landmark.

1910

“Lake” was added to the municipal name, creating Woodcliff Lake.

The reservoir is a working water-supply resource. Public access is controlled rather than open shoreline recreation. Veolia’s seasonal Watershed Recreation Program currently provides permitted access to designated areas for activities such as hiking, fishing and birdwatching.

Schools & education

Woodcliff Lake’s public-school system is compact: local students attend borough schools through eighth grade and then join the Pascack Valley regional high-school system.
